Facebook etiquette

Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Facebook seems to be the social networking site of choice these days. Pretty much everyone I know is on Facebook and that's where I get the news about what's going on in the life of most people I know. So many times in the last year or so I've caught up with someone I haven't seen in a long time, asked them what they are up to and then, as they tell me what they are up to, I've realised I already knew because I'd read it on Facebook.

In many ways it's actually hindering our (or, at least, my) socialisation skills. It's harder to make small talk with someone you don't see very often when you already know everything that is going on in their lives thanks to reading their status updates.

I've also noticed that some people don't seem to to be aware of the basic etiquette rules as they relate to facebook. Most people understand these unspoken rules, but some people seem to have missed the memo. So I thought I'd help out.

Facebook Etiquette
1. Don't break up with someone by changing your relationship status on facebook.
2. Don't post a deliberately vague and inflammatory status update in the hope of people commenting. (eg. Fuck you, bitch.)
3. Don't have a private conversation with someone via wall posts - everyone who knows both of you will have it come up on their home page.
4. Don't be rude about a mutual friend via wall posts - it's likely that the person you are writing about will read it.
5. Don't ask someone via a wall post how their crush on X is going. Particularly if X happens to be a facebook friend of the person you are asking.
6. Don't post naked pictures of yourself - when you post pictures they come up on the main page of all your facebook friends.
7. Don't tag a friend in a photo if you know for sure they won't want everyone seeing that photo.
8. If in doubt about a person's desire to be tagged in that (generally) drunken photo then instead politely point them in the direction of the photo and let them tag or not tag themselves.
9. If you ask someone to be your facebook friend and they decline you then don't keep trying - they don't want to be facebook friends with you.
10. A wall post is no substitute for actually talking to your close friends in person.

Well Chuck me

Tuesday, June 02, 2009
I'm obsessed with Chuck at the moment. Here are some things I like about the show:

- Zach Levi, who plays Chuck, looks like John Krasinski
- Sarah is HOT
- John Casey is sexy
- The show is damn funny
- Chuck and Sarah make a really cute couple, if they ever become a real couple that is.

I was very sad to learn that the next season is only going to be 12 episodes long. Damn the recession ruining my shows!

A productive Queens birthday

Monday, June 01, 2009
I've been very productive today. I've:

- Tidied my room
- Vacuumed my room
- Solved a problem that was stumping me with the editing my brother's wedding video
- Washed a heap of towels
- Worked out at the gym
- Am about to go off and win quiz night :P

A very successful Queens Birthday I'd say.

I like dispensing advice

Friday, May 29, 2009
Back in September last year I made a list of things I think are important for everyone to know. September was a long time ago so I thought I'd make add to that list.

Holly's list of things everyone should know (sadly I don't always follow my own advice):

1. Other people will forget the embarrassing thing you said or did long before you will, so you might as well quit worrying about it
2. Sometimes you've got to let other people just live their lives and make their own mistakes. Even if it hurts to watch
3. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure does make most things easier
4. If you're going to talk about someone behind their back don't be surprised or hurt when you find out someone else has done it to you
5. Life is short so don't spend it being miserable - find something good in your life and cling to that during the bad times
6. Right-wing governments will always suck
7. Not everyone can have a happy ending. If they could then it would just be an ending. Some people have to have sad endings just so we have something to measure the happy endings by
8. Sometimes it's okay to split the infinitive
9. Spiders are freaking scary
10. Only ever shop at Kathmandu during a sale - they have a new sale practically every week so you won't be waiting long
11. Same with Briscoes
12. Fart jokes are always funny
13. Incest jokes less so
14. Leonardo is the best ninja turtle
15. Roti sandwiches from Central Mexicano is the BNZ Centre taste AMAZING

Things I learnt today

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Damn it! I meant to blog earlier, but completely forgot about it. So now, as so often is the case, it is time to do the dishes and go to bed.

I did learn some things today though:

Things Holly learnt today

1. Tool songs are HARD on the drums
2. Thinking you'll quickly slip through the train doors as they are closing isn't as easy as you'd think when the train is totally full
3. Look before downloading so you don't accidentally download a 1.1gb file that is completely useless to you
4. Check that you do actually know the person you are talking to before saying, 'Hey how's it going! I haven't seen you in ages.'
5. Daydreaming as you are getting ready isn't a good idea when you already got out of bed late so should actually be rushing

If I could turn back time

Wednesday, May 20, 2009
The other day I said something to Kat about if I could go back in time and tell my 12 year old self anything it would be to take up running. She pointed out that there were probably other things I would also want to tell my 12 year old self. So we decided to make a list. Here's mine, and if you click on the link to Kat's blog then you'll be able to read hers.

Holly's list of things she'd like to tell her 12 year old self

1. (obviously) Take up running. If you fall in love with running you'll always be fit and skinny.
2. Don't give up playing the saxophone
3. Ignore mum and take up the drums
4. Take political science at university
5. Bet on France to beat the All Blacks at the World Cup. Every time.
6. You have the most amazing parents in the world. Stop being a little shit and making their lives miserable.
7. Don't date anyone who nicknames themselves Billbass - he's going to turn out to be a right-wing asshole and you will regret it. Do date Smash Williams - they don't get any better than him.
8. Join the debating team at school. I know it's scary, but it'll help you in the long run.
9. You don't suit really short hair. And you're a girl not a boy so dress appropriately.
10. Talk to your mum. She gives really great advice and will support you in everything you do. You don't need to hide anything from her.

What Holly thinks about at work

Friday, May 15, 2009
It's been a while since I did a list so I thought I might as well do one today.

Things Holly thinks about when she's not receiving calls at work:

- Whether anyone has written on her Facebook wall
- Whether anyone has put an interesting status update on Facebook
- What her next Facebook status update should be
- Whether anyone interesting is on Facebook chat to talk to
- What Kat will say in her next email
- What she should write in her next email to Kat
- What Corrina will say in her next email
- What she should write in her next email to Corrina
- What she should have for lunch (or if it's after lunch then what she should have for dinner)
- Whether she's going to have the will-power to go to the gym
- The time Stephen Fleming got 274 not out
- The time she saw Stephen Fleming in the Nike shop
- The time she saw Stephen Fleming walking down the street with his wife
- The numerous times she saw Stephen Fleming at the Basin

I think that's a pretty comprehensive list. So what have we learned today? We have learned that the main things I think about at work are Facebook, emailing Kat and Corrina, food and Stephen Fleming.

Stuff about me

Sunday, February 08, 2009
Inspired by the 25 Random Facts note going around Facebook at the moment, I thought I'd give it a go on here.

1. When I was little I had an imaginary friend named John.
2. My first cat was named Jack.
3. I learnt to ride on a shetland pony named Sam.
4. After Sam I had Muffin and Ziek. (Ziek was a girl so kind of an inappropriate name. Muffin was a boy.)
5. I named some of our goats, Dirt and Stone.
6. And one of our calves, Tar.
7. Before I discovered Stephen Fleming as my favourite cricketer, I loved Bryan Young.
8. I had a brief foray into replacing Stephen Fleming as my favourite player with Dion Nash. It only lasted a week.
9. My first crush was a guy named Gavin. I was 5 and he was 10.
10. When I was about 10 I ran away from home. I stayed away until the police came and found me. I only did it to see what would happen.
11. My cat Coby's first litter of kittens were named Winky, Blinky and Sam.
12. Her second litter of kittens were named after the NZ cricket team - we kept Stephen and Chris.
13. The teddy bear I couldn't go anywhere without when I was little was named Two Eyes. (He had a friend named One Eye)
14. I still love Westlife.
15. I still drive my first car.
16. I worked for an accountant for 5 years.
17. I saw The Lion King 8 times at the movies when I was 12.
18. I've voted Labour in every election since I turned 18.
19. I liked Helen Clark and thought she was a great Prime Minister.
20. I think Helen Clarke is a pretty darn good hockey player.
21. I used to do karate when I was a kid and I was really good.

I'm tired of coming up with things now so this is just going to be a list of 21 random things about me.

It's time to give thanks

Friday, November 28, 2008
I'm off to work (at a job I thought I would have been able to give up by now in favour of a real job) so thought I better blog now. I'm rostered to finish at 7.30pm, but am going to beg and plead to take someone's late shift, which could result in me being home after midnight.

It is Thanksgiving in America right now. I've always been sad that we don't have Thanksgiving. One, because public holidays are great and two, because I think taking the opportunity to give thanks for everything you have is a good idea.

So, even though as a New Zealander, I don't celebrate Thanksgiving I am going to give thanks here on my blog.

Things Holly is thankful for this year

1. My family
2. My friends
3. My flatmates (who are also my friends)
4. That I live in a country as wonderful as New Zealand
5. That, even though I don't like our new government, I live in a country where democracy actually works.
6. That, even though it doesn't effect me personally since I'm pretty darn conventional, I live in a country that recognises non-conventional relationships as legal
7. That I live in a country where the government will help me out financially when I need it
8. That my student loan is interest free as long as I stay living in New Zealand
9. That I've never had to suffer the terrible things that so many people in this world live with every day
10. That he is in my life, even though he doesn't feel the same way about me as I do about him

Unemployed day 8

Saturday, November 22, 2008
You've had the list of things I like about being unemployed. Now it's time for the list of things I don't like about it.

Things Holly hates about being unemployed
1. Having no money
2. Job hunting
3. Getting rejected
4. Not being able to find jobs I actually want
5. Applying for jobs I don't even really want and yet still getting rejected
6. Feeling lazy because everyone else is at work and I'm not
7. Not knowing how long before I find a job
8. Knowing Christmas is coming and I can't afford presents
9. Not being able to afford to go anywhere except job interviews and the gym
10. Getting bored during the day

Yep, a lot of those things have to do with having no money. Having no money REALLY sucks.

Unemployed day 5

Wednesday, November 19, 2008
I think I'm going to have to stop numbering my posts like this soon. I don't want to watch those numbers get too high.

I applied for 3 jobs today. Good stuff. The thing that is driving me crazy is that the earliest closing date for applications of jobs I've applied for rencetly is 28th November. The waiting is annoying because I REALLY want a couple of the jobs I've applied for. Ah well. At least I sort of get a holiday.

I've decided to make a list of things I like about being unemployed and a list of things I don't like. Today will be the list of things I like, because it's good to be positive.

Things Holly likes about being unemployed

1. Not having to wake up at 7am or earlier
2. Having heaps of free time
3. Being able to get to the gym every day
4. Being able to play video games without feeling guilty that I should be studying
5. Not having assignments
6. Being able to stay in my pj's all day - aside for a quick trip to the gym (today is the only day I've done that.)
7. Being able to read the books i've been looking at longingly all year
8. Learning the Seek website back to front and upside down. (Ok, that's not much of a great thing. But I sure do know that site well these days.)
9. Being able to stare uninterrupted at photos of John Krasinski for as long as I feel like it
10. Not having to go to bed early

No more politics

Monday, November 10, 2008
So, I decided I'm done with politics for a while. I'm sure many of you will be pleased. But what does that leave me to blog about I wonder?

I think I might do a list. I like lists. Hmmm but what to make a list about....

Oh! I know!

Holly's list of different types of celery
1. Regular celery

Hmm that's all i've got. No, wait! I've thought of another...

2. Regular celery

Crap. I already had that one. Maybe this wasn't a great list idea. Perhaps I can think of a better one tomorrow.

(5 points to whoever anyone who gets the reference)

It's all about me

Wednesday, October 08, 2008
I was wondering today what impression anyone who reads this blog, and doesn't actually know me, has of me after reading for a long time. I'm not certain there is actually anyone who consistently reads it and doesn't actually know me, but if there is I wonder at their impression of me.

I'm guessing it's somewhere along these lines (depending exactly how long they have been reading)

- Is studying this year
- Used to work in a job that drove me crazy most of the time
- Lives in New Zealand
- Obsessed with The Office
- Loves John Krasinski
- Loves Stephen Fleming
- Is a staunch Labour supporter
- Hates all things right-wing
- Loves movies
- Thinks I'm funnier than I actually am
- Is a wee bit insane, hopefully in a good way
- Likes playing video games
- Loves cricket
- Obsessed with Harry Potter
- Always comes 3rd in the local movie theatre quiz night

A pretty superficial version of me, but also accurate. So, that's me according to my blog. Neat.

What is a Jim?

Saturday, September 27, 2008
Okay, I'm assuming any of my friends who actually want to watch the premiere of season 5 of The Office will have watched it by now. If you haven't then you really shouldn't read this blog.

Holly's favourite things about the season premiere:

1. Jim tried to get Dwight to beer him five
2. Holly (the character, not me) found out that Kevin isn't mentally challenged. In a very embarrassing way
3. That there was a goof and Ingrid picked it up immediately
4. Michael's goatee
5. Dwight's goatee
6. Jim is just ridiculously good looking
7. Jim proposed to Pam!
8. Pam went to the wrong class, and then didn't leave
9. Ryan is back, as the receptionist.
10. Jim wore a wet shirt after being caught in the rain. (Ha, caught proposing!)

My most favourite thing - the way John Krasinski says my name. I LOVE that there is now a character with my name on the show.

Another list!

Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Things that are annoying Holly today:

  1. 1. My gym shoes are munted and hurt my feet.
  2. 2. My iPod headphones are munted and I can't hear out of the left one.
  3. 3. My credit card is maxed out and I can't afford to pay it off right now.
  4. 4. My overdraft is pretty much maxed out and I can't afford to pay it right now.
  5. 5. The above 2 points means I can't afford new gym shoes.
  6. 6. Or new iPod headphones.
  7. 7. It's Wednesday night. I swear it is ALWAYS Wednesday night.
  8. 8. I have a big research assignment due soon and I'm very behind.
  9. 9. My bus is possibly not running tomorrow, but I'm not entirely sure.
  10. 10. We thought our book was arriving looking like a book today and it did not. It just looked like a pile of paper. We have to wait another 6 weeks to see it looking like a book. Poo.

Only in New Zealand

Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Only in New Zealand....

1. would we choose a foreign minister who hates foreigners
2. would we allow politicians who didn't get voted into their electorate to still get into parliament as list MPs
3. would we think it is acceptable to have a town slogan "Stokes Valley - better than you'd expect"
4. would a street sign saying "Old Bollock Rd" rather than "Old Bullock Rd" make the news not once, but twice
5. would whale vomit washing up on shore not only make the news, but also be mistaken for cheese
6. would the NZ Idol winners be chosen based on looks rather than talent
7. would Shortland Street actually attract viewers
8. would a life prison sentence not actually mean life
9. would Whale Rider be considered a good movie
10. would it be considered cool to refer to Wellington as Wellywood

(quick disclaimer - for those of you who like to take whatever I say literally, I do know these things can happen in other countries.)

If anyone else has any then feel free to comment them. Thanks to Ingrid for helping with this list. :)

American's are weird

Sunday, September 14, 2008
Yep, that's right. Here is a list of weird things about Americans.

1. They don't seem to believe in the letter U (c'mon color? behavior? labor? Clearly these words are correctly spelt colour, behaviour and labour.)
2. They keep replacing the letter S with the letter Z (realize, socialize etc should really be realise and socialise.)
3. They can't say some words, like aluminium and Antarctica. (They also can't spell aluminium since i'm pretty sure they spell it as stupidly as they say it - aluminum.)
4. They drive on the wrong side of the road.
5. They have the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car.
6. They call university 'college', when clearly college is actually high school.
7. They don't understand metrics.
8. They don't have free medical care.
9. They are possibly going to vote in a 72 year old as President of their country.
10. They voted in Bush. Not once, but twice.
11. They think cricket is an insect, when clearly it is actually the best sport in the world.
12. They don't play rugby. Instead they play a sport that requires them to wear a ridiculous amount of padding. C'mon call yourselves men?
13. They think a 'billion' is a thousand million. And people wonder why they have so many billionaires.
14. They call a camp bed a 'cot'. Yet a cot is what a baby sleeps in. This confused me for so many years of reading. I couldn't understand why whenever someone went to stay at a friend's house they were forced to sleep in a bed meant for babies.
15. They call a 'mcmuffin' from Mcdonalds, a 'biscuit'. It's NOT a biscuit people!
16. They call 'jelly' 'jello' and 'jam' 'jelly'. Just plain weird.
17. They don't think that Randy is the most hilarious first name EVER.
18. They pronounce the letter Z zee instead of zed.
19. They sue anyone and everyone.
20. They all want to be on tv even if it means people are laughing AT them, not with them.

My future husbands

Wednesday, September 10, 2008
It's time for a list.

Guys Holly is going to marry:

For those of you who couldn't recognise my boys by their pictures:
1. Hugh Laurie
2. Colin Firth
3. Colin Hanks
4. Stephen Fleming
5. John Krasinski

Yes, that is a very specific order. Hugh Laurie and Colin Firth are a bit older. So I marry them first. (You've got to marry the older ones first.) Then Colin Hanks goes next because it seems to make sense to replace one Colin with another. That way I don't have to remember a new name.

Deciding the order of Stephen Fleming and John Krasinski just about killed me. I've loved Stephen Fleming forever, but he's currently married. So, I want to just marry him for a little while - then he can go back to his wife and kids. I'm not a homewrecker.

That leaves me happily ever after with John Krasinski. Can't complain about that. He's freaking sexy.

if you don't know why that's awesome, then you need awesome lessons

Thursday, December 27, 2007
I have decided that I really like writing lists and I do not write enough of them. My Christmas lists were good but I think I can do better!

Holly's Awesome List of Awesome Things That Are Awesome

1. My lounge-suite. It contains the most comfortable couch in the history of the universe AND the two most comfortable recliners in the history of the universe. No joke
2. The fact that I used the word awesome 3 times in the title of this list
3. John Krasinski
4. The Office (TV show, NOT the office I worked in until 7 days ago)
5. That I no longer work at the movies!
6. My nephew
7. Mountain Dew
8. John Krasinski (he's awesome enough to deserve multiple mentions)
9. House (the TV show again)
10. Hells Kitchen (okay, gotta stop listing TV shows now. I do have a life! Honest!)
11. Toast (I haven't eaten yet. I'm hungry and dreaming of toast)
12. Kitset furniture from The Warehouse (if I had more money I would buy better furniture and no longer think this is awesome. But I don't have much money so I think it's pretty bloody awesome actually.)
13. That there was a tiny bit of snow in Upper Hutt yesterday. Some families had a white Christmas (sort of) in the middle of summer!
14. My DVD collection
15. My family (this list is not in order! I would never put my family down so low)
16. My friends
17. John Krasinski
18. John Krasinski
19. John Krasinski
20. John Krasinski

Sorry about the repetitiveness of the last 4. But he is! And I wanted to get to 20 but I got tired of thinking of stuff.
