At the gym

Wednesday, April 15, 2009
I was at the gym tonight cycling away and out of the corner of my eye I saw a little person next to the rowing machine. For some reason I got very excited about this and desperately wanted to turn around but didn't want to be rude.

I couldn't resist so I did a big exaggerated turn and pretended I was looking at everyone. I was very disappointed to see that it was just someone doing some exercises on their knees.

Now, I don't want anyone to think I am prejudiced against little people. I just have never seen any little people at the gym. I also got very interested when I saw a kid working out one day because I'd never seen a kid there either. (He was like 8 or something.) I just like to see different people at the gym. It's weird I know, but there you have it.

Cricket at the gym

Friday, March 20, 2009
I enjoy watching the cricket at the gym. I know I've talked about that on here before. I plug my headphones in and get lost in my own little cricket world. It's great.

There is, however, one problem. I am not a silent cricket watcher. I cannot help but gasp and shout when there is a wicket, or nearly a wicket. Thankfully I have mostly got the shouting under control, but I particularly noticed today that I definitely don't have the gasping under control. The people around me must think I'm very strange as I suddenly make a strangled cry. Hopefully they just think I'm working out real hard and that it's a cry of exertion. Somehow that seems acceptable... Being unable to contain my horror at the cricket seems somehow less acceptable.

Can't find a park!

Wednesday, March 18, 2009
I think that perhaps I am the unluckiest person in the world when it comes to carparks. I never, ever find one right outside where I want to be. My bad luck is most obvious when I go to the gym. When it's busy I can never find a park. Often I'll drive through the gym carpark, see no parks, so go and park down the street somewhere. Then after a 5 minute walk back to the gym I'll see that the carpark has emptied and there are a bunch of free parks.

It happened today. I drove through the carpark. Nothing. I actually found a street park not too far away and walked back to the gym. Sure enough, there were 6 free parks when I got back there. 6! After only about 3 minutes.

The worst luck though was a few months ago. I couldn't even find a street park so I kept circling the gym carpark. I circled it 8 times and then gave up and drove ages away. It took me about 10 minutes to walk back. When I got back.... So many free parks it made me want to cry.

I'm guessing I somehow always time my gym visits right before a class finishes. So the carpark is full when I arrive, but by the time I give up looking for a park the class is over and a whole lot of people are leaving the gym.

Either that or I really am cursed.

An extra bonus for going to the gym today

Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Happily, I was rewarded by the fates for my trip to the gym today. I was being very lazy and talking myself out of going when I found some motivation and decided to be good and go. When I arrived there I discovered that the cricket game I thought was tomorrow was actually tonight. So instead of listening to music or watching Dancing With the Stars (which had been my previous options) I instead watched the cricket. Bliss.

Lost the cricket :(

Saturday, January 03, 2009
Well, we didn't win the cricket. It was a good game though and I guess that's what counts. Our team these days is too inexperienced to win in these close contests. The New Zealand team has almost always been too inexperienced or too lacking in confidence to win the really close ones. It's times like these I wish I was Australian.

Cricket is very good for my fitness though, I've got to say. I was just finishing up at the gym today when the rain delay in the game meant they put on an old ODI from 1999. A game from 1999, of course, means a game featuring Stephen Fleming. Well I couldn't miss watching that so I ended up staying an extra 40 minutes. Boy was I exhausted when I left!

The gym is fun!

Thursday, December 11, 2008
Lucky readers, you get two posts today since it happened to be 'Secret Thursday' but I also had something to say.

I finally, after a year, discovered a way I can really enjoy the gym. Unfortunately it's not something I can repeat very often. Normally when I go to the gym I listen to my iPod. My preference is to listen to audio books because it fills in the time and stops me concentrating too deeply on the time. Nevertheless, I am always completely aware of how long I've been on each piece of equipment and more than ready to jump off when my time is up. Because of this convincing myself to work hard is an effort. Not so today.

I walked into the gym ready to listen to my audio book. Excited about the prospect, even, because I'm really enjoying it and desperately wanted to know what happened next. But as I walked out of the changing room I suddenly remembered one of the great things about my gym... Every single piece of cardio equipment outside the cardio cinema has its own tv screen. I've occasionally used these screens to watch a music video if it happens to have Justin in it, other than that I haven't really used them. Well, today the cricket was, of course, on Sky. No longer having Sky in our flat I'd been listening all day. As I approached the cardio equipment I realised the gym does have Sky so I could totally watch the cricket while I worked out!

I decided on the bikes because it would allow me to keep my head relatively still. (This is important because my headphones are currently in a very delicate state and cut out if they move too much.) I settled onto the bike and set it for my usual level. Normally the maximum I do on the bike is 20 minutes cos I like to mix up the cardio equipment I use each session rather than sticking to one thing for the entire session. Since I knew I wouldn't be moving to any other cardio machines (damn my dodgy headphones) I set it for an hour. Seriously, I could not believe it when my bike suddenly kicked into cooldown mode. I had barely looked at the clock and definitely didn't think I was anywhere near the hour. I set it for another 30 minutes, not willing to give up watching the cricket yet. Again I got a shock when cooldown mode started. I was tempted to keep going, but could feel that my body was pretty exhausted.

My verdict? I'm definitely going to go there and watch cricket everyday there is cricket on. It'll mean doing more cardio and less weights. But I don't think that will be too much of a big deal if I do my weights on non-cricket days. It also means, until I get new headphones at least, staying only on the bikes. I don't think that's a problem when I'm doing 90 minutes though!

I cycled 30km, climbed 3km and burned 700 calories. Nice. Yay for my obsession with cricket!

This one time, at the gym...

Saturday, September 13, 2008
I just realised that i'm not going to have another chance to blog today, so better do it now. I just finished up a very good session at the gym. Now i'm off to work and then meeting a friend after.

Something very funny happened at the gym today. I was up in the womens gym using the bike. From the bikes you can see down into the big weights area. I really enjoy watching people down there lifting weights that are often probably heavier than me. Anyway, this one guy - extraordinarily muscled guy - bent down and as he did his shorts ripped. The guy was awesome about it, there were lots of people around but he didn't look the slightest bit embarrassed. Instead he grabbed the front of his shorts and pulled so they ripped right off then took a bow. (It's ok - he had underwear on) It was hilarious. There were heaps of people around and lots of laughing. He took a bit of a risk really... What if his underwear had been ripped too? Ha then he might have been embarrassed.

Right. Time to go and stand at the railway station for many hours. Fingers crossed it doesn't rain!
