Dancing with the Stars

Tuesday, March 31, 2009
I'm watching Dancing with the Stars. I love Geraldine Brophy. She's so nice. (And she goes to my gym.)

I am sad to hear that people on the internet and in the gossip mags are ripping into her. Stupid people.

Bus drivers are mean

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
At 6.20am this morning I was standing at the bus stop outside my house. (If anyone cares, the stars are still visible at 6.20am.) Along came the bus at the same time I could see someone running down the street towards me.

There is a girl who has caught the bus at the same time as me most of the mornings I have been on early shift. I've talked to her and know that she also starts work at 7am. I was pretty certain it was her running down the street, unfortunately by the time the bus got to me she was still pretty far away. I mucked around paying and then told the driver that there was someone running towards the bus and I was pretty sure it was someone who wanted to catch the bus.

He said he couldn't see her. I quickly stuck my head back out the door and she was still running towards us. I told the bus driver this, but apparently because he couldn't see her he didn't care so he drove away anyway.

I spent most of the morning (and still a bit now really) feeling guilty for not doing a better job of holding the bus and feeling incredibly sorry for her for missing the bus. I know there are no other buses or trains for at least another half hour after that one, so she must have been at least half an hour late for work. Maybe more thanks to the build-up of traffic that would have happened over the half hour she was waiting for the next bus.

Stupid bus drivers. Why can't they just be nice?

I could care less

Tuesday, February 24, 2009
It always amuses me when I hear people completely misusing a phrase. I think the most commonly misused phrase would be, 'I could care less'. Well, if you can care less then you are not caring the least possible amount are you?

I am also amused when people write that they are 'guttered'. Essentially that means you are in the gutter. It's supposed to be 'gutted' like had your guts removed. I've noticed on Facebook that 'guttered' is very commonly used.

Other misused phrases I thought of: (some commonly, others not)
- I'm telling on the teacher. (Kids used to say that all the time at my school. They meant they were telling the teacher.)
- It's a doggy dog world. (I heard this on the bus one day. I assume the person meant dog EAT dog world.)
- For all intensive purposes. (Should be all INTENTS and purposes)
- Irrigardless (instead of regardless)
- I did a 360 on the issue (so you're back where you started? You would have been better off doing a 180)

Bike helmets

Saturday, January 24, 2009
Today as I was driving into town to meet some friends from school I saw a girl riding a bike. She was about 10 years old and wasn't wearing a helmet. I was disgusted enough by that. So imagine my total disgust when a second later I spotted the girl's mum 50 feet behind her CARRYING THE HELMET. What does the mum think she's going to do? Put it on her daughter after her daughter's brains have already been splattered across the road?

It just shocks me that the mother is clearly condoning the girl not wearing a helmet. Who the hell knows why she bothered even bringing it with her. She certainly wasn't running to catch her daughter and remind her that she'd forgotten her helmet, so I think I have the right to assume she doesn't have a problem with her daughter not wearing it. I can understand that a 10 year old might not fully grasp why it is so important to wear a helmet when riding a bike. But her mum should grasp it and ensure that her daughter complies with such an obvious safety step. Hell, it's the law, if nothing else her mother should be making her wear it for that reason.

I remember back at primary school they made a huge deal about helmets. I think the law that you had to wear them was just coming into effect. We saw videos of the results of not wearing one and having a crash, we had guest speakers talking about loved ones they'd lost to cycle accidents - where a helmet would most probably have saved a life, we had some weird puppet show about it and we had the police come to talk to us. I guess they don't make such a big deal about it these days, but maybe they should.
